Writer's Block: Back to the Future

There's something quite fascinating about photos like this.  Argentinian photographer Irina Werning recreates childhood photos from England, Germany, USA, the Netherlands and France, her hometown Buenos Aires, Korea, Taiwan, Dubai and Tokyo in her series Back to the Future (part 1, part 2).

I have to say this is my favorite among the lot: taken in 1990 and 2011, respectively at the site of the Berlin Wall.

Coffee Break: Alice and Dorothy

Nevermind that she made a bunch of Lady Gaga drawings. UK artist Helen Green made this drawing of Alice and Dorothy, which makes one wonder what they're talking about.

Here's my take, just for fun:

Alice: I've been having those nightmares again....
Dorothy: Honey, consider yourself lucky...

Mental Notes: Rejection Letter

"The Rejection Slip" by Tom Hudson published in MAD magazine in July 1963
Fact is stranger than fiction. In 1963, cartoonist Tom Hudson sent MAD magazine a letter with an illustration asking for a rejection letter from the publication to add to his collection of rejection letters from various publications. Read on to see what transpired after this first exchange.

Food Porn: Introducing the Mochi Donut

If you love mochi as much as I do, you'll love this. Japanese sweets deli Mochicream have created what they call the Mochidos (mochi donuts) -- mainly rainbow colored mochi in the shape of donuts. Who are we to object?

Coffee Break: Hyperrealistic art

Would you believe that this is actually an image created with just a pencil?

Italian artist DiegoKoi (Diego Fazio) is a self-taught illustrator who started out as a tattoo artist.

More of his work on deviantART via TwistedSifter

Another set of amazing hyperrealistic work, such as the one above -- are actually paintings by some really talented artists such as Italian painter Roberto Bernardi.

Similar to DiegoKoi's art are portraits made with ballpoint pens. Illustrated above is Samuel Silva (VianaArts)'s "Baby cradled in Dad's hands" on deviantArt.

Mental notes: Use duct tape & WD-40

I used to have a Duct Tape Book, believe it or not. It contained dozens of solutions using duct tape. Along with it, I heard a person needs WD-40. Here's what I've been told: "If it moves and it shouldn't use duct tape. If it should move but doesn't, use WD-40."
