Coffee Break: Gummi chandelier

I hate chandeliers. But I'll make an exemption for this one:

Artist Kevin Champeny created this "Candelier" out of 5,000 gummi bears.

Coffee Break: What color to wear in 2013

It's official: 2013's color will be Emerald, according to Pantone.

"Emerald, a vivid, verdant green, enhances our sense of well-being further by inspiring insight, as well as promoting balance and harmony.

Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. Since antiquity, this luminous, magnificent hue has been the color of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. It’s also the color of growth, renewal and prosperity – no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.

Equally harmonious on the cosmetic color wheel, Emerald dramatizes all eye colors as it beautifully enhances green eyes, is compatible to blue eyes, emphasizes the green undertone in hazel eyes and intensifies brown eyes to make them appear deeper. Emerald is also a perfect complement to peaches, pinks, roses, ruby reds and aubergines – offering a variety of lipstick and blush options. For those who want to sparkle and stand out, Emerald is the perfect punctuation point in nail color because of its complementary nature."

If you're curious, Pantone has been at this for over a decade. Here's the list of official colors over the past 12 years:

  • PANTONE 17-1463 Tangerine Tango (2012)
  • PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle (2011)
  • PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise (2010)
  • PANTONE 14-0848 Mimosa (2009)
  • PANTONE 18-3943 Blue Iris (2008)
  • PANTONE 19-1557 Chili Pepper (2007)
  • PANTONE 13-1106 Sand Dollar (2006)

  • PANTONE 15-5217 Blue Turquoise (2005)
  • PANTONE 17-1456 Tigerlily (2004)
  • PANTONE 14-4811 Aqua Sky (2003)
  • PANTONE 19-1664 True Red (2002)
  • PANTONE 17-2031 Fuchsia Rose (2001)
  • PANTONE 15-4020 Cerulean (2000)
  • Personally though, I say black will (still) be the color for 2013.

If you're still thinking of little presents for the holidays, you can kick off this Color of the Year thing with these Lightsaber chopsticks. Sure, they're not in Emerald, but hey -- it's close enough.

If you want them, grab them at the Neatoshop.

    Notes to Self: Nog

If you're curious to know more about this festive drink, take a few points from Mental Floss, with a pinch of nutmeg.

And just in case you're planning to make some, here's a recipe from the same site you may want to try:

    Alton Brown’s Nog of Ages

    Recipe courtesy Alton Brown, 2012

12 large chicken eggs (see note)
    1 pound sugar
1 pint half n half (see the other note)
    1 pint whole milk
    1 pint heavy cream
    1 cup jamaican rum
    1 cup cognac
    1 cup bourbon
1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg (plus more for serving)
    1/4 tsp kosher salt
    • Separate the eggs and store the whites for another purpose
    • Beat the yolks with the sugar and nutmeg in a large mixing bowl until the mixture lightens in color and falls off the whisk in a solid “ribbon.”
    • Combine dairy, booze, and salt in a second bowl or pitcher and then slowly beat into the egg mixture.
    • Move to a large glass jar (or a couple of smaller ones) and store in the fridge for a minimum of 2 weeks. A month would be better, and two better still. In fact, there’s nothing that says you couldn’t age it a year but I’ve just never been able to wait that long.
    • Serve in mugs or cups topped with a little extra nutmeg grated right on top.

    Mental Notes: Gillard's Zombie apocalypse

I'm personally not a fan of Julia Gillard (or any politician -- I say, never trust one -- but that's another story), but I thought this was funny in an odd publicity stunt sort of way.

For the British, it's not plain English... (and is in a way, just like corporate English)
